Who are Caveira and Capitao on Rainbow Six Siege?

Ubi.com
UbiSoft is at it again. They released their 3rd set of FREE DLC for Rainbow Six: Siege which includes 2 new characters with weapons and specials and one new map. The update is called Skull Rain and features a Brazilian map. The questions being: Why Brazil? And Why “Skull Rain”? If you remember the Dust Line article we wrote then you will notice that UbiSoft gets their inspiration for characters from the headlines. Skull Rain is no different.

According to the DLC road map put out by UbiSoft, the 3rd release was supposed to come out in July, but didn't make it out until mid August. Their release schedule has been a month behind and corresponds with some ESL event using Rainbow Six: Siege. A July release would have put “Skull Rain” in a good position right before the Rio Olympics. During the selection process for the 2016 Olympics there was great concern over whether or not Rio could host a safe Olympics. This coming after a successful hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. After years of unrestrained violence in the favelas of Rio the government decided it was time to crack down. 2014 through 2016 saw an uptick of policing using a special group called BOPE.

What is BOPE?

BOPE is Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais which is a special operations police unit. BOPE has come under scrutiny in the past for being heavy handed and corrupt. There have been allegations of evidence planted on dead bodies to make them look like drug dealers. But with the coming global events of 2014 and then later 2016, Rio had to crackdown on crime. To crackdown on crime they had to up policing and clear out the favelas. To up policing they had to pump money into the police and BOPE. BOPE was tasked with clearing out the favelas and they paid a high price in lives accomplishing that task ahead of these major global events.

Death is a very possible outcome in law enforcement and more so in an elite direct action unit like BOPE. In relation skulls are a very important part of the BOPE lore and tradition. We will talk about skulls a little later though. First, lets introduce you to the characters.

Who are the characters?

UbiSoft named the two characters Caveira(female) and Capitao(male). UbiSoft has a trend of offering one male and one female character in each DLC so this was expected and will most likely continue in the Japan update scheduled for October but will most likely release in mid November because all updates have been a month behind. So let's meet the characters.

Who are Caveira and Capitao?

ubi.com

Caveira

Notice the word under the skull with a eye patch.
“Caveira” means “skull” in Portuguese and is directly related to BOPE. In the picture above taken from a BBC documentary it is shown in one of BOPE’s meeting areas and is a part of their motto. In fact, BOPE members use the term “skull” as a greeting instead of “welcome”. The skull is a symbol very important to BOPE and is repeated in the DLC from the name to the face paint. I looked at the possibilities for who they may have modeled the character after and as in Dust Line the female is not a direct relation because like there are not female Navy Seals there are no female BOPE operators. There are also no notable female military Brazilians that I could find. But there was this one female police officer who was making the rounds in media back in 2013 in the lead up to the World Cup crackdown and questioning the safety throughout Brazil. Her name was Coronel PMFem Cláudia Araújo Romualdo.

You can see she has that rugged attitude.  But she is older and not quite what they would want in a character that would be played by younger players. I think they crossbred her with the character from “Fast Five” Elena Neves.

Elena Neves is, of course, the Spanish actress Elsa Pataky. Elena provided the appeal the game needed. She is...wow! And this picture of her modeling on the beach. Check out the pics below.

Capitao

twitter
“Capitao” like you would have guessed means “Captain” Captain is a common high rank used in law enforcement. When I first saw the models for the release of the character I knew exactly where they got him from.

Commander Gripp
Meet Commander Marco Antonio Gripp from the BBC Two series “Welcome to Rio”. The episodes had many different aspects of the favelas and the cleanup before the World Cup and Olympics you can see more on the link above. The video that talks about Gripp shows his role in the cleanup and at the end we learned he died shortly after the filming. He was shot while clearing out a favela.

Notice the skull with a eye patch
In each of the photos you will notice they aren't an exact representation and they have darkened the skin to make them look more stereotypical Brazilian. But if you watch the documentary you will notice that most of them are light skinned. They also added an eye patch to Capitao which goes back to BOPE lore(above). It would be very difficult to be an operator without proper depth perception. You will also notice the text in the picture above.  "Ao Velho Caveira" It means "The Old Skull".  This is also why Capitao appears to be much older.  Once again the game looks back at BOPE lore.

Let me know what you think.  Comment on the FB post.

September 2016 Dictionary Update OED

Dictionary

Periodically, the Oxford English Dictionary(OED) adds new words most being slang that receive common usage. The period appears to be March, June, September and December or every three months. The English language is constantly growing, and with new technology new words are created frequently. Interestingly enough, so many new words are being created around technology that non-English languages are unable to keep up. One easy example is Iphone. The Iphone 7 was recently released and with it a new device called the air pod. I am sure it is only a matter of time before air pod is added to one of these quarterly lists. Often times when listening to foreigners talk about technology you will hear them say English words because there is no equivalent in their language.
Bablefish

As this language of ours grows, there is good and bad. The OED publishes its monthly updates and some of the entries are ridiculous to say the least. Some of the entries are unwise to say the least. Especially, when these words are associated with fads or trends from small often times internet based communities that are guaranteed to fade. Some of the words even have other perfectly viable names and are already outdated.

June:
Fro-yo
Leetspeak
Straight-acting

March:
Army green
Daughterhead (I don't even want to know what that is...)
Bruh

As you can see some of these words are interesting to say the least. Many of the words I was unable to even speculate as to their origin or meaning. And I enjoy trying to deconstruct words and determine their meaning based on my knowledge of etymology. Given that interest we are also rolling out a etymology series of videos soon. Be sure to subscribe to find out more and like the Facebook page for bonus words.

'Merica!

September is no different. The list also includes words that appear to be from obscure subcultures and outdated trends. September has a few interesting words.

Biatch
Moobs
Various derogatory forms of butt sex
Clickbait
‘Merica
And, of course, Yolo

With our ever expanding vocabulary it makes you wonder what the future holds. Many sci-fi writers include the concept of planetary languages with small regional dialects. Which language do you think will eventually take over the world? Could it be English the language of the internet? Could it be Joss Whedon's idea of Chinese? Let us know what you think.

Iphone 7: Disappointment strikes again

Iphone 7

Apple is back with the Iphone 7 a mere two years after the Iphone 6. Back in 2015 I wrote about them ditching the headphone jack.  I also rightly predicted here the following:

  1. While logical, Apple would most likely not be including wireless charging in the next iteration Iphone despite its presence in the Apple watch.

  1. Wireless audio would be a huge thing for them as a result of one port whose primary use would be charging due to poor battery life.

  1. Poor battery life. Two extra hours...

  1. The Apple car would most likely be the next wireless charging device.

It is sickening to see outlets like CNET clamor over their wireless headphones that “automagically” connect when you place it near the phone. *Facepalm* Holy crap! The Iphone has NFC?!?  Didn't the 6 have that back in 2014? Didn't Gingerbread have that back in 2011? Oh, never mind Apple is STILL behind the innovation curve.

So what does the Iphone 7 have?

The Iphone 7 now comes with a tiny cord to plug into the recharge hole thingy so you can listen to music. Oh, and they unimaginably made bluetooth wireless version of their Beats headphones.  Could this be the reason why they haven't switched to high quality audio?  The Iphone with the latest being the 7 still doesn't have a lossless playback option. Apple still has ALAC and isn't using it in their flagship device, instead opting for their AAC format. I have two possibilities as to why and they are as follows:

  1. You won't notice the difference. Apple could think that you won't notice so they choose not to include it because of 2.

  1. Battery life. There it is again. This appear to be a reoccurring topic in their devices.

So what does higher quality audio have to do with battery life?

Everything. Audio files are compressed and transmitted then decompressed and heard, to put it as simply as possible.  Each compression and decompression cost battery life because the processor has to do work very quickly.  An even bigger battery hog is video and 3d processing. You notice this when your device gets warm while playing games and movies.  The bigger issue is the battery drain would not only exist on the phone, but also on the Air pods.

core77.com

Not the car that runs on compressed air that will never come out, Silly, but those tiny wireless things that cost $160. Ya, the ones that Apple spent years developing a special bluetooth chip for to give you zero latency which isn't a huge issue for a decent bluetooth device. The case offers 24 hours of battery life while the Air pods offer 5 hours of battery life from each charge with 15 min giving you 3 hours of battery life from a "quick charge". But they can seamlessly switch between your Apple watch, Iphone, Mac and Ipad within that 5 hour period. Oh, ya and that is all that these Air pods can connect to. Like the sound and want to use it outside the Apple ecosystem? TOO BAD!

They are no Bragi Headphone with 6 hours of use and 250 hours of standby battery life, passive noise isolation, audio transparency(lets you hear the world around you), in ear controls and multiple ear fit sizes for $40 less than the Air pods.
Or the Bragi Dash with 4gb of storage and a 3 hour battery life, waterproof up to 1 meter, along with the above features for $300.

But don't think about that and just look on the bright side.  In 2 years Apple will graciously give you another two hours of battery life on the Iphone 8 ,and if you're lucky another feature on your phone. ;)

Earthquakes strike again

Ground shattering development

Earthquakes happen all the time.  We hear about earthquakes in California very frequently.  Most people understand the fault line associated with California.  The famous San Andreas fault line has been the subject of many movies including the recent “San Andreas” starring Dwayne Johnson, the very sexy Carla Gugino and Alexandra Daddario(she has the most stunning eyes).  But what we don't hear often is about earthquakes in Oklahoma.
Earthquakes in Oklahoma are happening more frequently. Today Pawnee,OK was hit by an earthquake that could be felt as far away as Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas and Texas to name a few.  Why is Oklahoma having earthquakes?

Whose "Fault" is it?

Oklahoma is the home of 12 fault lines capable of producing earthquakes like the 5.6 that hit recently which is tied for the largest from back in 2011.  Oklahoma is reported to have had nearly 400 small earthquakes last year.  The earthquakes are becoming more frequent and more powerful.  Why now? Some people believe that the earthquakes are directly related to fracking. Fracking is a means of oil extraction that forces a high pressure watery mixture into shale to force the lighter oil out. Fracking has caused massive economic booms in places like Texas and South Dakota.  Fracking isn't a new technology, but drilling techniques have advanced to make it much more profitable.  How can fracking cause earthquakes?
No official studies have been able to conclude that fracking is indeed the cause.  The USGS has not been able to link the two events, but still some groups will issues findings that come up with results that earn them grant money.

The knowledge gap

We don't know what exactly is causing the quakes, but we can be sure they will continue.  The worst part of an earthquake is there is no way to predict them.  Storm systems that cause hurricanes and Tornados can be tracked and prediction models are accurate enough(which isn't all that accurate) to warn us erring on the side of caution.  Hermine is the latest example. It was supposed to move inland gaining strength over the weekend and instead was downgraded.  Now it is poised to soak the coast and regain its strength.
The biggest take away is natural disasters are cyclic and not predictable by current models. With all the technology we have today, we don't have the computing power to crunch the data required to accurately predict these devastating events(if only we had optical quantum computers).  There is so much still on this Earth that we don't fully understand, but we sure would like to think we do.
